Oscar's Restaurant
About This Spot
Oscar’s Restaurant nestles comfortably in the heart of Roanoke Rapids, inviting you into a space where time slows just enough to catch up with familiar faces and friendly hellos. Walking in feels like stepping into a cherished local tradition, a place where the simple joy of shared meals weaves quietly through the hum of daily life.
The mood here is unpretentious and warm, the kind of down-to-earth pace that encourages lingering over morning coffee or a hearty plate of comfort food after a long day. Conversation flows easily between families, neighbors, and newcomers alike, all drawn together by the steady rhythm of this welcoming small-town diner. The decor, humble and sincere, echoes the charm of a place that has seen countless breakfasts and dinners unfold with ease and grace.
The kitchen at Oscar’s thrives on those soulful flavors that make you feel right at home—whether it’s the gentle sweetness of sweet potato pancakes or the savory satisfaction of fried chicken paired with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy. Each dish carries a sense of care and familiarity, the kind that speaks to decades of coming together around the table. Sweet tea refreshes, biscuits with sausage gravy comfort, and classic touches like hush puppies and fried green tomatoes remind you that these are recipes passed down with pride and patience.
While the menu honors Southern classics in generous portions, what stands out most is how these familiar dishes are elevated by genuine hospitality. The servers’ attentiveness and the easy camaraderie found here create an experience that’s as much about connection as it is about taste. You might find yourself settling in not just for a meal, but for a moment of belonging, surrounded by the subtle chorus of shared stories and gentle laughter.
Oscar’s doesn’t rush its visitors—here, meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly, with those you share them with. Whether you’re a local stopping by for a weekday lunch or a traveler seeking a true taste of Roanoke Rapids, this unassuming spot offers a reminder that some of the most satisfying experiences come from the places that feel less like destinations and more like extended family tables.

We stopped here on our way to Suffolk VA for business. We prefer to stop at independently owned places since we also operate a small business. We loved the sign that hung in the window proclaiming the power of Jesus. The atmosphere was exactly what to expect for a small town diner, full of families, small talk and good food. Our food was served hot and fresh(although my shrimp came out a good 5 minutes after my husbands pork chops). They had a nice variety of options for any type of eater. Over all we would choose to come back if we were in the area. It would be amazing if they served breakfast later on Sunday.

The Wednesday lunch special was "chicken and pastry" Debra talked me into getting it, it was delicious, a bowl full of chicken and pastry (forgot to take a picture) just the way I love it, homemade thin pastry and lots of chicken in almost every spoon full. And for one of my sides was a beautiful side salad with all the trimmings, even cubed tomatoes, not slices and HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING. Debra came by and asked how was everything, "told her don't know how it could be any better" Food was great, service was great and it's a nice comfortable place to eat. Definitely recommend this restaurant for homecooked country style food. Update: Returned Sunday for another delicious bowl of chicken and pastry along with the side salad. 100% satisfied.

Good place to eat. We were visiting from out of town and I wanted pancakes. They were good but nothing extra ordinary. They were very big. Lots of locals there. I would go back again. I must add, our server was top notch. She was excellent! And the lady taking the plates after we ate was delightful!

Loved this place. Old time diner. Service was great food was great atmosphere was great. I had the fried pork chops. They were large and plenty I had turnip greens, cabbage, and sweet corn pudding. My wife had southern fried chicken, yams, Black eyed peas.I had turnip greens. And then banana pudding would highly recommend this place.

Good fresh cooked food. Service was awesome. BBQ was a little dry, but they offered sauce, so it wouldn't be too vinegary. Atmosphere: Good ol time feel. Over all very good!!

We came near closing and they still let us sit and enjoy our meal. The best food I have had since I’ve been in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
